speech. my favorite speaker was condoleezza rice, who gave a comprehensive and strong presentation for mitt romney and his ability to capture the global aspect of what a president needs to have to be in control. it was refreshing to hear paul ryan's speech. he gave a comprehensive approach in support of his running mate, mitt romney. he gave a lot of insight into who the man is that we will have to choose to vote for. >> thank you. next up is patrick from new york. caller: i am a tea party republican. i have been very active with that. i was pleased to learn more about paul ryan, to see his wife

we cannot continue spending with the debt we are faced with. it affects almost every american in this country with gardens of race and income level, -- regardless of race and income level. >> was there something you took away from the speech tonight? >> they all understand well what our problems are. they face those issues and i think they have the experience and the intelligence to assist president romney. >> why are you a republican? >> i have been a republican since the civil rights era of the '60s. -- 1960's. it would not have happened

ashamed to tell you what it is worth now that it is paid off. it burns me up. these people can come here and get us thousands of dollars a month in food stamps. my family is barely surviving. barely surviving. it is a shame. my husband died. he was a vietnam veteran. he passed away. it is a terrible situation. i have a son. i thought i could leave my house to somebody or retire here. i can retire here, but i might not live to see 60 years old because there are gunshots going off every night. it is terrible.

we talk about his mother. ultimately, doing something amazing and building her own business. we talked about that. i know him personally. even beyond that, paul feels so passionately about these issues because he cares so much for the people. he loves the people of the state. he loves the people of america. people of america got to see that tonight. >> have you talked to him about this experience over the last three weeks. >> we text quite a bit. he lifted my family up and was very supportive he reminded me to pray. i have tried to do the same for him. it has been amazing. one of the best things is seeing people come up to you at the events and tell you they are praying for you. i told him he will feel that.

he could feel that passion and empathy. he could feel people reaching out and lifting him up in prayer and support. that is remarkable. >> what is this convention need to hear? >> seeing who he is. we saw that tonight. we saw who paul ryan is. you saw a guy who was sitting around some root beer as a kid, eating pizza. you saw that tonight. i think we need to hear from mitt romney tomorrow night just like we are sitting around a table with him talking about why he wants to be the president. not because he wants the title, but to do something great. really, his deep love and commitment. people want to hear more details about his vision to get this country working again. the more he talks about that, the better foundation he will

and doing it in massive volumes. tonight along, 600,000 tweets about the convention. >> it also shows how much integration twitter has had in those four years. you are not just helping people are around here.her you have computer models. what are you finding. -- finding? >> what moments during the convention are driving conversation? what are causing people to reach for the cellphone and say, i have something to say about this? bob ryan finished his speech, the family came out, there was 600 -- 6700 tweets per minute.

paul ryan talking about his faith. 6500 tweets per minute. tonight, paul ryan was talking about the budget. condoleezza rice it cannot -- condoleezza rice, 4000 tweets per minute. we are looking at what we call the twitter index. this is the measure of twitter .sers'attitudes we are assessing whether they are positive or negative. paul ryan came into the night with a twitter index below the 30's. he was among the more negatively viewed topics on twitter for the day. following his speech, he shifted up only a few points.

that could mean a couple different things. there was a vibrant this -- vibrant conversation across the aisle. compare this to last night, where ann romney nearly doubled her rating over the course of her speech. >> to the ratings go up when they are in the public eye and then you see them falling off? >> twitter is an intense platform. you see the biggest win the event is going on. if you look over the last couple of months, you saw the biggest spite's around the gay marriage announcements, supreme court decisions on health care. what you usually see is a big spike on that day, and then it tapers off for a while. this is a unique event because it expands several days followed by another convention next week.

we have seen an increase for mitt romney. we will expect to see the same pattern for president obama over the events next week. >> what is the difference between what you are doing at a scientific poll? >> a scientific poll is scientific. they are trying to come up with a specific sample of saying, this many households with women, this many households with men, these age groups. the sample of a poll is representative of the population of a whole. -- as a whole. twitter is a census. a few years ago, we could not have done this. the audience would have been too small. today, there are 400 million tweets sent every day. every day, there are more tweets send them there were before the 2008 election.

were before the 2008 election. >> as we close out, two/last questions. how close do they look like the american voting public, the people who tweet? >> one of the biggest challenges is identifying what is a likely voters. we are trying to come up with new models to find that. we are going with people who are actively engaged with politics and talking about politics. they are likely voters. twitter users are more likely to vote. they are 50 percent more likely to influence someone else's vote.

the polls in 2009 were not showing health care as an issue, but it was the number one most talked-about issue on twitter. the questions in town hall were about health care. the people tweeting were those who were showing up to the town hall. >> we live and an active twitter community on c-span. we are using any hashtag throughout this convention. how can people follow? >> there are two website where you can follow the day-to-day movements. if you are watching the conventions, go to put your.com -- twitter.com/rnc2012.

however, i am a college student and i am concerned that what president obama has enacted with student loans and student debt will be taken apart by the romney-ryan administration. i feel as a college student this would be harmful to college students like myself and the younger generation to help america out. i believe president obama has done a healthy job with that. connecting to every single american in different ways. i do not believe paul ryan or mitt romney will be able to do the same job.
